This month, our guest speaker is Brian Conroy, co-author of the book South Bay Flashback, San Jose's Forgotten Music Scene in the 1960s.
For more than fifty years, rock historians documenting the 1960’s psychedelic music scene have focused their attention on the Haight Ashbury, The Fillmore, and the Avalon Ballroom. But fifty miles down the Peninsula, the South Bay boasted an equally vibrant music scene. A scene centered around legendary music venues that shined a spotlight on San Jose bands like Syndicate of Sound, Count Five, and People!—all of whom scored national hits. Brian will recount stories of that often overlooked musical history that put the South Bay - and Campbell! - on the map.
Brian is the author of two books of humorous essays, You Don't Hear Me Complaining and I'm Just Sayin'; and two collections of Buddhist parables, Stepping Stones, and Lotus Petals. He wrote a series of essays on music and musicians entitled Shooting Stars and Blazing Guitars; and co-authored the musical history, South Bay Flashback. For thirty-five years he taught theatre and public speaking in public schools, and storytelling at San Jose State University. He is the author of the illustrated children's books Prince Dighavu and Bright Moon.
